How can we honor God? We can honor God through obedience, by doing everything from obeying our parents to obeying our pastor.

Obedience in the Bible is mentioned 11 times. Obeying your parents. Obeying is something that is to be done immediately. Nothing is obedience if it is not something that you do with a joy in your heart and a smile on your face, willing to honor God. It’s a matter of the heart. If you are grumbling in your heart while you are fulfilling whatever your parents asked of you, it is not honoring to God or your parents. God tells us in the Bible, “Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise; that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth” (Ephesians 6:1-3).

God sees things in our hearts that may be rebellious and dishonoring that we may not say to our parents, but we are still saying it in our heart, and God hears it. “Then hear Thou in heaven Thy dwelling place, and forgive, and do, and give to every man according to his ways, whose heart Thou knowest; (for Thou, even Thou only, knowest the hearts of all the children of men)” (1 Kings 8:39). If there are things we would not say in God’s face if we could see Him, we should not say them at all, since God is always there and hears everything—He is an all-knowing, awesome, infinite God (Psalm 147:5). I know that at times it may be hard to obey our parents, but no matter how hard it may be, we need to ask for His strength to do it with a smile on our face and joy in our hearts. We can always find something to be happy about when our parents ask us to do something. For example, when my mom asks me to vacuum out the car; I can be thankful to be obedient and simply help and serve our family by keeping the car clean and tidy. I can also be thankful that we have a car to drive.

We will be blessed if we honor and obey our parents. Here are a few more Bible verses for deeper study concerning obedience to parents: Exodus 20:12, Ephesians 6:1-3, Colossians 3:20, Matthew 15:4, Proverbs 1:8, Proverbs 13:1. “The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes” (Psalm 19:8).
